Nis Randers – by Otto Ernst (1901)

(As performed by Achim Reichel, above)

Crashing and howling and bursting of night,
Darkness and fire in a furious hunt -
A shout through the breakers!

The sky is afire, and now you can see:
A wreck on the sandbank! In the tide it does sway;
The abyss will claim it!

Nis Randers peers out - and says without haste:
"I can see a man in the mast;
We have to go get him."

His mother grabs him: "You're not going in!
I want to keep you, you're left me alone,
I demand it, your mother!

Your father went under, and Momme, my son,
And Uve's been missing for three years and gone,
My Uve, my Uve!"

Nis steps on the bridge, his mother in back.
He points to the wreck and solemnly asks:
"And _his_ mother?"

He jumps in boat and with him six more:
Tall, hard, enduring Friesian score;
Their oars, they are whizzing.

Boat up, boat down, in a dance of hell!
Now it must shatter...! No, it stayed whole!...
How long now, how long?

With fiery scourges the ocean is lashing
Its man-eating stallions thrashing along;
They snort and they foam.

Their furious haste piles one on the other,
One leaping onto the other one's neck,
With hooves that are pounding!

Three weathers together! The world is alight!
What's to behold? - It's a boat, coming in! -
It's them! They are coming! -

All eyes and ears are strained to the dark...
Still! - What's the call? - He shouts through his hands:

"Tell mother, it's Uve!!"

"Een Boot is noch buten!"

"One boat isn't in!" - by Arno Holz (1863-1929)

(As performed by Achim Reichel, above)

"Ahoy!!! Klas Nielsen and Peter Jehann!
Just checkin' if we're not porridge yet!
Y'all did see the Hobgoblin, I bet?
Thank God we're back home!'

So the fishermen shouted, as they shoved ashore,
pulling their boats up the beach, to the fore.

As the seas rolled dully in;

But Han Jochen quietly counted and said,
all the while somberly shaking his head:

"One boat isn't in!"

The tanned crowd, now, much more solemnly,
panted over the dunes, to the village green;
greeted from afar, with wind-blown hair,
by the women at the grave of the giants' lair.

And "Korl!" it went, and "Dearest Marie!"
and "'Tis great, that you are back here!"

As the seas rolled dully in -

"And Hinrich, my Hinrich? And where is he?!"
And Jochen pointed to the roaring sea:

"One boat isn't in!"

The Seagull Stone loomed high on the shore,
upon it, a notorious building.
They carried in oakum, and wood from the beach,
and oil was poured for the kindling,

A fire that shone out far through the night,
to call out loudly: Oh, come on home!

As the seas rolled dully in -

Here is your wife, in night and in wind,
wails loudly, while kissing your child:

"One boat isn't in!"

But the night passed on and the sea became calm,
and the sun shone into the flames;
when the poor thing sobbed: "As God will!"
and collapsed unconsciously.

They carried her home on a plank of wood,
where she lies now in sickbed and fever.

Outside, the sea is lapping;

Her child is playing, her "Little Jehann",
and dreamily babbles every now and then:

"One boat isn't in!"

360 Degrees - Division in Time and Space

360 Degrees The partitioning of time and space into 360 steps Partitioning a whole into 360 degrees / 60 minutes with a compass and a ruler as universal instruments for the division of space and time The partitioning of a full circle as a representative of the whole into 360 degrees goes back to Babylonian times of farming and simple technology  - 5000 years ago, around 3000 BC to 300 BC. Our current decimal number system is based on the number 10; their numerical system was based on the number 60 . In those days, the emphasis was not , as it is today, on arbitrarily precise mathematics, but on those principally so; it was not about calculations ( these were then neither possible nor needed ), but about division and construction of artifacts with available aids . Within simple life, symmetry, dividing evenly, and fair and correct sharing, are of big, if not existential importance. Since reality itself is but an approxim...

German humor

😀   Rough and politically wrong. In a fake TV documentary many years ago, some faked 'Citizens of Poland' in very loud clothes 'claimed' that their deceased uncle had authored every pop song of the last century, and proceeded to prove this by playing them with tubas and other very loud instruments - making every one sound like a polka. The whole extended family joins in, ' Seductive Sis ' sings while her pay-by-call phone number is displayed on the screen, and so on. "Having stolen their electricity" (another bad cliche, if anything, we're stealing theirs), they are 'forced' to turn the volume down to a whisper from their side so as not to attract too much attention, thereby forcing everyone watching the show to turn up their own TV sets to *full volume* so as to even hear anything - knowing full well they would suddenly turn it up again at the other end, but not WHEN... After lulling the audience by drawing it into the nati...

Economics, Science, and Religion 2

[2] previous     /     next slide In 1859 , Charles Darwin published his observations on the origin of species , which introduced the concept of evolution into the social discussion: not only in the field of biology , but, as a side effect, in geology as well; the world was no longer static , a completed creation, but a dynamic one, constantly evolving; or at least it had been in the past . However, Creation itself was still in some way considered to be complete and static , at least as far as it was projected into the future ; meaning that evolution may have been the way things had developed up to the present , but no further ; the question why this should be so was carefully avoided. This is just one of the many unsolved paradoxes and mysteries resulting from the incomplete implementation of the discoveries made during the era of industrialization: If the world and its human inhabitants are the result of an evolutionary process, then that ...
